Maurice Ravel: a song composer impossible to pin down. Born in the heart of Basque country and of Savoyardian descent, lulled to sleep as a baby by Iberian folk songs, educated in Paris, influenced by Spain, fascinated by the lure of the East, setter of folk songs and texts in Aramaic, a man who juxtaposed civilized order of classicism while setting words in the popular style of a café concert, who toured extensively in Europe as a conductor and had huge success across the Atlantic as an interpreter of his works. The colour, rhythm, poetry and imagination in his music place Ravel’s songs amongst music of the highest art and this lunchtime we will explore this multi-faceted composer. A composer of the whole world.
