Leeds Lieder are delighted to present A Day of Song 2015, our first event programmed by newly appointedDirector, Joseph Middleton. Highlights include Carolyn Sampson soprano with her regular duo-partner, Joseph Middleton, and Benjamin Appl baritone with RNCM Staff Pianist Jonathan Fisher. Full details below.
Event 1: Young Artist Recital

Alumni of Leeds-based Young Opera Venture, Heather Lowe and Philip Wilcox, join forces with RNCM Staff Pianist Jonathan Fisher to celebrate Leeds Lieder founder Jane Anthony’s great love of song.
Event 2: Composers & Poets Forum
10am-3pm Room 219
Composers from universities in our region join forces with local poets to rehearse new songs composed especially for today.
Event 3: ‘Die Blumensprache’: Floral images in Schubert’s songs
12-12.45pm Room 219
Paul Reid, until recently President of the Schubert Institute, gives a lecture exploring Schubert’s multi-faceted responses to flowers in poetry.
Event 4: ‘Blumenlied’: Schubert’s Flower Songs

Jonathan Fisher: Piano
BBC New Generation Artist and rising star baritone Benjamin Appl has been acclaimed for his performances of Schubert Lieder, appearing at New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and at the Schubertiade Festival in Austria. He has the honour of being Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s last private student.
Event 5: Song Masterclass
3-4.30pm The Venue
Three song duos selected from the UK’s finest conservatoires explore song repertoire with internationally acclaimed soprano Carolyn Sampson and Leeds Lieder Director Joseph Middleton.
Event 6: Composers and Poets Showcase
5-5.45pm Room 219
The world premières of the songs created by our composer and poet duos.
Event 7: Celebrity Recital
‘Fleurs’ – Carolyn Sampson & Joseph Middleton
7.30pm The Venue
Carolyn Sampson is admired the world over for her beguiling voice and charming stage presence. Tonight she performs repertoire from her latest CD together with her regular duo-partner Joseph Middleton. A myriad of emotions are conveyed through their floral programme which includes songs by Schumann, Strauss, Fauré, Debussy, Hahn, Britten and Quilter. Carolyn and Joseph will also be selling and signing copies of their recent CD of this repertoire following their recital.
