During the much-lauded series of livestreams Leeds Lieder presented in 2021, Kitty Whately and Joseph Middleton gave a recital praised by Bachtrack as “musically excellent…a communicative and expert duo, comparing favourably to such famous English song teams of recent memory: Janet Baker with Gerald Moore, Felicity Lott with Graham Johnson.” They make a welcome return to Leeds Lieder to celebrate the music of Vaughan Williams in his anniversary year, performing his major cycle The House of Life, setting words by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Juxtaposing this great work are selections from his pupils, highlighting art song compositions from British women in the twentieth century.
