Acclaimed British tenor and Leeds Lieder favourite James Gilchrist has developed a reputation “unsurpassed among lyric tenors” (The Independent). Always thoughtful and imaginative in his programming, his repertoire for Leeds Lieder takes in the heady romanticism of Schumann and Beethoven, both grappling with new ways of delivering song, and culminates with one of the greatest French song cycles. Joseph Middleton’s recording of La bonne chanson won him an Edison Award – the highest Dutch recording honour. It sets Verlaine’s love poetry in the most feverish and ecstatic way.
