Friday 30 September – Sunday 2 October 2005
The inaugural Leeds Lieder Festival was the realisation of a dream and the result of a great deal of planning and hard work. Described by Artistic Director Iain Burnside as “our Yorkshire roller-coaster of concerts, talks, masterclasses and workshops”, the weekend explored the range and diversity of art song from pre-Schubert to the present day, including the art-song of the Indian sub-continent, setting the pattern for all the Festivals to come.
One of the world’s greatest singers, Elly Ameling, enthralled audiences at a ‘Conversation Piece’ with Iain Burnside and the Festival Masterclass. She was joined by Barbara Bonney, Susan Bickley, Jonathan Lemalu, Elizabeth Atherton, Andrew Kennedy, together with award-winning young artists from Yorkshire, in an unforgettable weekend of song.
